Windshield Replacement in Hershey

A cracked or shattered windshield isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a structural and safety issue. Your windshield supports up to 60% of your vehicle’s roof crush strength in a rollover, provides the rear surface for airbag deployment, and houses the cameras and sensors your driver assistance systems depend on. Keystone Auto Glass performs professional windshield replacements for Hershey drivers using quality glass, industry-standard adhesives, and proven installation methods.

When to Replace vs. Repair

Not every chip or crack requires a full replacement. The right call depends on the size, depth, location, and type of damage:

  • Repair is usually possible for chips smaller than a quarter and cracks shorter than three inches, provided the damage is not in the driver’s primary line of sight and has not reached the inner glass layer.
  • Replacement is required when a crack is longer than three inches, runs to the edge of the glass, is directly in the driver’s sightline, or has compromised the laminated inner layer.
  • Pennsylvania inspection standards prohibit cracks or damage that obstruct the driver’s view. A windshield that would fail inspection should be replaced promptly to avoid a citation and keep your registration valid.

If you’re unsure, we’ll assess the damage and give you an honest recommendation. We won’t push a replacement if a repair will do the job.

What We Use: OEM vs. OEM-Equivalent Glass

Glass quality directly affects optical clarity, structural performance, and ADAS sensor accuracy. We offer two options depending on your vehicle and preferences:

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Glass is the same glass your vehicle shipped with from the factory, sourced from the manufacturer’s supply chain. It is the safest choice for vehicles with windshield-mounted cameras and sensors, as it is engineered to exact optical specifications.

OEM-Equivalent (Aftermarket) Glass is manufactured to match OEM specifications and is appropriate for many vehicles, particularly those without ADAS hardware. We use only aftermarket glass that meets or exceeds ANSI Z26.1 safety standards.

We will recommend the right glass type for your specific year, make, model, and trim—especially if your vehicle requires ADAS calibration after replacement.

Our Replacement Process

A professional windshield replacement follows a precise sequence. Here is what happens at Keystone Auto Glass:

  • Damage Assessment: We evaluate the damage and confirm whether replacement is the correct course of action.
  • Glass Sourcing: We identify and source the correct glass for your vehicle, including any heated, acoustic, or heads-up display (HUD) variants if applicable.
  • Safe Removal: The damaged windshield is carefully removed to protect the pinch weld, trim, and surrounding paint from scratches or corrosion.
  • Adhesive Application: We apply a urethane adhesive that meets FMVSS 212 standards. This bond is what holds the glass structurally during a collision or rollover.
  • Safe Drive-Away Time: We observe the manufacturer-specified cure time before releasing your vehicle. You will be given a clear safe drive-away time before you leave.
  • ADAS Coordination: If your vehicle requires camera or sensor recalibration, we handle that as part of the service. See our ADAS Calibration page for details.

Does Pennsylvania Require a Waiting Period After Replacement?

Yes. The urethane adhesive used to bond your new windshield requires time to cure before the glass achieves full structural strength. Most modern urethane systems reach safe drive-away strength in one hour under normal temperature and humidity conditions, but cure times can vary. We follow the adhesive manufacturer’s specifications on every job and will give you the exact wait time for your vehicle before you leave our shop. Do not drive the vehicle before that window has passed—doing so risks the windshield shifting in a hard stop or collision.

Will My Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement?

In Pennsylvania, comprehensive auto insurance typically covers windshield replacement, subject to your deductible. Many drivers are surprised to find that their deductible is waived or low enough that the replacement costs little or nothing out of pocket. Pennsylvania law also does not require insurers to offer a zero-deductible glass endorsement (unlike some other states), so coverage terms vary by policy.

We work directly with all major insurance carriers and can handle the claims process on your behalf. When you call, have your insurance information ready and we’ll take it from there.
