How Long Does Windshield Chip Repair Take?

The majority of simple bullseye repairs on clean, fresh damage are closer to 20 minutes. More complex breaks, contaminated chips that require additional cleaning, or multiple chip repairs on the same vehicle extend the time toward the 45-minute range.

There is no adhesive cure time associated with chip repair. Unlike windshield replacement, which uses urethane adhesive that requires a minimum cure period before driving, chip repair resin is fully cured by UV light during the procedure. Once the technician has polished the repair and removed the equipment, the vehicle is ready to drive immediately. No waiting in the shop, no leaving the car overnight, no arranging alternate transportation.

What Affects Repair Time

Several variables can extend or reduce the time a chip repair takes:

Break complexity. A clean bullseye with a well-defined void takes less time to fill and cure than a star break with multiple crack legs or a combination break with several damage zones. The injection and vacuum cycling process takes longer when the resin needs to work into multiple narrow pathways.

Chip age and contamination. A chip that has accumulated dirt and moisture requires more thorough cleaning before injection can begin. In some cases, a technician will spend several minutes on cleaning alone before the actual repair process starts. Fresh chips, particularly those that occurred within the last day or two, typically require minimal preparation.

Glass temperature. Cold glass causes resin to flow more slowly and requires longer vacuum and pressure cycles to achieve complete fill. A repair on a cold Pennsylvania morning may take 10 to 15 minutes longer than the same repair in mild conditions. Very hot glass, on the other hand, can cause resin to begin curing before the injection is complete, requiring the technician to work more carefully and deliberately. Moderate glass temperature, roughly between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, produces the fastest and best repair conditions.

Number of chips. If you have multiple chips on the same windshield, each one adds approximately 15 to 20 minutes to the total service time. Multiple chips on a single vehicle are worth addressing together in a single appointment rather than separately, both for efficiency and because most shops can offer a better price per chip when multiple repairs are done at once.

Mobile vs. in-shop service. The repair process itself takes the same amount of time whether it is performed in a shop bay or at your home or office. For mobile service, add the technician's travel time to the appointment duration, but that time does not require your presence or attention.

How Chip Repair Compares to Windshield Replacement

The time advantage of chip repair over replacement is significant. A full windshield replacement typically takes one to two hours for the installation itself, plus a mandatory safe drive-away wait of at least one hour for the urethane adhesive to reach initial cure strength. Full adhesive cure takes 24 hours, during which certain activities (running the defroster on high, going through a car wash) should be avoided.

In total, a windshield replacement represents a half-day or full-day event in terms of scheduling, while a chip repair is a 30-minute errand. This time difference is a financial difference as well: chip repair is a fraction of the cost of replacement, and most Pennsylvania insurers waive the deductible for repair.

The most expensive and time-consuming outcome is waiting for a repairable chip to become an unrepairable crack and then needing replacement anyway.
