Insurance Claims and Coverage

Does Insurance Cover ADAS Calibration After Windshield Replacement?

As ADAS calibration has become a required part of windshield replacement on an increasing proportion of vehicles, insurance coverage for this additional cost has become an important question. The answer for most Pennsylvania drivers is yes, but confirming it requires asking the right questions at the right point in the claims process.

The Coverage Principle

When your insurer agrees to cover a windshield replacement under comprehensive coverage, their obligation is to restore your vehicle to its pre-loss condition. A vehicle with a functioning ADAS camera system that receives a new windshield without calibration has not been restored to pre-loss condition: the safety systems that were functioning before the loss are not functioning correctly after the repair.

This principle of full restoration is the foundation for calibration coverage. The insurer must pay not just for the glass, but for all work required to restore the vehicle to the condition it was in before the loss. For a vehicle with windshield-mounted ADAS cameras, calibration is required to complete that restoration.

Most major insurance carriers, including State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Erie, Nationwide, and others operating in Pennsylvania, recognize this obligation and cover ADAS calibration as part of a windshield replacement claim on applicable vehicles.

Why You May Need to Ask Explicitly

Despite the coverage principle, calibration is not always automatically included when a claim is opened. Several factors can result in calibration being overlooked:

Adjuster unfamiliarity. Not all insurance adjusters are fully up to date on ADAS technology and calibration requirements. An adjuster who does not know that your vehicle requires calibration may create a claim that only covers the glass installation cost.

Automated claims processing. Some insurers use automated systems to generate repair estimates based on vehicle information. If the system does not flag your vehicle as requiring calibration, the calibration line item may not appear in the automated estimate.

Claim documentation timing. Some insurers process calibration as a separate authorization after the glass claim is initiated. If you do not ask about calibration when opening the claim, it may be added later but requires an extra step.

The solution is straightforward: when you open a glass claim on a vehicle with ADAS cameras, explicitly ask whether ADAS calibration is included in the claim authorization. Ask the question directly and note the response. If the claims representative is not sure, ask to speak with a supervisor or have the shop contact the insurer directly to confirm before service begins.

How the Shop Can Help

An experienced auto glass shop that regularly handles ADAS-equipped vehicles knows how to navigate the calibration coverage question with insurers. When you provide a claim number to the shop, they will confirm the coverage before scheduling service and will typically handle any documentation the insurer needs to approve calibration as part of the claim.

At Keystone Auto Glass, we confirm calibration coverage directly with the insurer before scheduling on every ADAS-equipped vehicle. If there is a documentation gap, we address it with the insurer rather than leaving you to sort it out. You should not arrive at your appointment uncertain about whether calibration is covered.

What If the Insurer Disputes Calibration Coverage

On rare occasions, an insurer may resist including calibration in a claim. If this happens, several responses are available:

In practice, most coverage disputes over calibration are resolved when the vehicle manufacturer's service documentation is provided. Insurers are aware of their obligation to restore vehicles to pre-loss condition and recognize calibration as part of that obligation once the requirement is documented.

Vehicles Not Requiring Calibration

For vehicles that do not have windshield-mounted ADAS cameras, calibration is not applicable and not a claim consideration. The claim covers the glass installation and any associated trim or molding, and calibration is simply not part of the service.
